1st September

This week we had natures calendar flying overhead, which was a sure sign summer was over and September was here.                                                                                                                        Natures calendar were the gees who were starting to fly on their long journey abroad.

You can hear them long before you see them, then the v shape appears, it is an amazing sight as you see them flying and changing positions at the front as they go, constantly speaking to each other.

After the first group passes, we have a constant, flow of separate groups flying by each day, and every group goes in exactly the same direction.

The cucumbers have actually come on and are producing loads right now, which is really surprising, as they have been terrible all summer, we can only put it down to the very hot temperatures we had through July, which we are guessing slowed them down, but right now they should be slowing down and the leaves are turning, but they are thriving.

Out in the field we can see the change in season with the courgette leaves, but they are still producing crates upon crates of courgettes every day, and they will keep producing right up until the first frost, although slowing down on the way before jack frost arrives on the scene.

This week in the tunnels we need to plant golden ball turnips, it is a fast-growing yellow turnip, it is small and the skin is so thin it can be roasted whole with the skin still on or peeled and cut into strips then boiled and mashed with butter and seasoning and taste amazing or simply added to pies and stews to add great flavour.

We have done them before, but like the swede and beetroot we have always direct sown the seeds, and they are hard to weed and the seeds so small hard to get uniformed sowing.

So, we have blocked the seeds, just like we have done with the swede and beetroot this year which has been amazing, and we now have three thousand great individual golden ball plants ready for planting, we will put them in the tunnel because it is late in the year, and if it works, we will do different batches early in the year next year.
