16th June
We had another good week of nice dry warm weather.
This helped us get all the brassicas weeded.
The brassica’s plants are big, so they are not that hard to weed, and I have been through them three times with the weeding machines on the tractor already.
But they are covered in fleece, so this must all be moved so we can get in, then at the end of the day they need to be re fleeced again or the pigeons will be in for a feast.
In total the fleece is seven hundred and fifty meters long, and forty-two meters wide, it covers a huge area, so there is a fair amount to be moved each time.
This week we have been harvesting kale and spring cabbage, and before we harvest, again need to take the fleece of, before harvesting, but that is only about fifty meters so not too much.
By the end of the week, we had all the brassicas hand weeded, they will not need to be done again.
This week will start weeding the leeks and onions again, we have already done them once, when we finish bed weeding, we will have hand weeded the onions and leeks three times and I will have been through with the weeding machines about a dozen times, it’s a constant fight with the weeds at this time of the year.
It is a busy time in the field, and we still have tunnels to weed and re plant.
We also have cucumbers growing like mad and the need tied up and de side shooted every morning.
This week we are going to be harvesting our first cucumbers of the year.
This is early, there won’t be enough for everyone straight away, but they will be going in as extras and there to order as an extra to your deliveries.
We also got our curly and flat leaf parsley planted in the cosy tunnel two thousand of each.
These seeds take the longest out of all the seeds we sow to germinate and start to grow.
Our next planting will be out in the field we have three thousand kohl rabi almost ready for planting.
We plant the first two batches of kohl rabi in the tunnels for an early harvest.
We then block another two batches for the field.
The next batch we will block at the same time that we do the over winter cauliflower and purple sprouting broccoli.
