24th March
I’m bit later than usual in writing the weekly newsletter.
If I have time, I will do it on a Friday night or Saturday night, failing that I always do it on a Sunday at some point.
But Friday and Saturday were busy and Sunday I had to take Calum to a Rugby tournament that his team came second in, this took up all morning, then we were of to Hampden to see Scotland v Greece.
Erin and Calum have never been to Hampden or an international match, so were super excited to say the least.
The atmosphere and the national anthem were amazing as per usual, and so was the first 5 minutes, then it went pair shaped for the remaining 85 minutes.
Not the best match for their first experience.
But Calum and I go to see St Johnstone when we can, so we are used to these performances.
So, it was late by the time we were home, hence a later than usual newsletter.
The reason Friday night and Saturday night were so busy, was that on Monday we managed to re sheet two tunnels.
Usually, we only sheet one tunnel a day and completely finish it before moving onto a second one.
But Monday’s weather was really good with zero wind, the rest of the week was the same forecast, but with frosty mornings.
Pulling a 50 meter by 12-meter polythene sheet over the tunnel hoops in the frost is pretty hard, the polythene sticks to the frosty hoops.
So, by 9am on Monday we had the first sheet over the first tunnel and safe enough it couldn’t blow away if any wind did arrive, it only takes around 8pmh of wind to make things tricky.
So, we got the second tunnel ready and pulled over the second sheet.
By 11am we had two tunnels re covered and the polythene secure.
The door ends then need to be pulled tight and secured, the ends are secured with strips of wood nailed into the door frames, then the polythene round the sides need to be filled in with earth.
It took the whole of Tuesday to finally finish the tunnel polythene.
Then it was the job of re hanging the doors, there are three doors at each end, two big ones for the tractor to get in and out, and one normal door for us to go in for watering and weeding.
All that is now done, the last job is sorting out the irrigation, then rotovate and plant.
Both tunnels should be fully planted by the end of this week.
