29th September

We have had a good harvest from the purple sprouting broccoli this week, although months too early and not the amount or size of heads we would usually be harvesting.

I had thought the crop would be completely wasted with it producing far too early with the long warm dry spell they have had after we planted them.

Unfortunately, there is not enough to put in everyone’s as we had planned for at the beginning of next year, if you do want some you can place an order, and we will add it to your net.

The over winter cauliflower that was blocked and planted at exactly the same time, and we expected to harvest at exactly the same time as the purple sprouting, is looking like what it should do at this time of the year, and so far looks like we will be harvesting it around February into March as usual, so I cant understand how the purple sprouting has only grown half the hight and produced heads months too early.

Farming and weather always test us out through the year; there are never two seasons the same.

We finished of all the over winter blocking of seeds for the tunnels this week, these are all in the wee tunnel, these will be getting planted in the tunnels when we have finished harvesting.

The cucumbers are still producing we have had an amazing crop of off them this year, along with the climbing French beans, chillies and Tomatoes.

But their season is coming to an end, with the leaves all starting to die of now, we should get to the end of October then it is the laborious task of untying them pulling them down and taking them out of the tunnel, we will put broad beans in behind these, this tunnel will need the extra feeding and aeration that the broad beans give to the soil when they are growing, and then when we rotovate them in.
