2nd March

March is here already, and the crops we planted in the tunnels for over winter are starting to come to life and grow, amazing what a wee bit longer daylight and a small rise in temperature does.

With the irrigation up and running we can now give them a wee water, they don’t need very much at this time of the year, a couple of times a week is just enough.

We have Spinach, Ruby chard, red lettuce and spring onions all coming to life.

In the two big cosy tunnels we had Romanesco Cauliflower which we harvested a few weeks ago, these were a trail and very successful, so we will be doing a whole tunnel for the end of the year.

We also had a leafy green cabbage in the cosy tunnel too; these we have been harvesting for the deliveries.

One cosy tunnel has now been fully harvested, so this week we will go through with the discs and get the stalks and roots all chopped up, then we will leave it for a week for them to die of and then I will rotovate and roll, then direct sow some oriental salad mix.

There is plenty space in these cosy tunnels as they are ninety meters long, so we will also plant the Pak choy which we blocked a few weeks ago, they are coming on fantastic and don’t mind it being a wee bit cooler.

Last week we blocked some beetroot seed, only four thousand, this is really too early to be doing beetroot, but my plan is to bring them on in the seed trays in the small tunnel then plant them in the second cosy tunnel, and my thinking is we should be harvesting beetroot at the same time that I start planting my first beetroot out in the field, might not work, but it will be a great crop to put in the nets early in the growing year, if it works.

This week we finally got the new shed roof on, so the Fergie and the siroma now have new beds for the night, plus we have a nice dry place for servicing the vans again, the last two services we have done have been outside in the pouring rain not the best.
