4th May
Another good week of weather and more planting done in the field.
We now have all the early leeks, and all the onions planted one hundred and twenty thousand plants.
With the weather heating up the tunnels are now nice and cosy, cold in the mornings but by 10 am they are heating up.
One job we need to do next week is plant the tomatoes and cucumbers, they have shot on in the greenhouse and are ready for planting.
I already have the tunnel rotovated, we now need to get the compost spread then rotovate again, so fingers crossed by next week when I write the newsletter, I will be saying the tomatoes and cucumbers are planted.
We have the first batch of courgettes ready for planting too, we usually plant one hundred and fifty in the big cosy tunnel for an early harvest, then out in the field we plant another thousand.
All the squash plants are now blocked of and have started to germinate, if the weather keeps up, we will be planting them in around four weeks.
After finishing planting the onions, we then had to empty a wee tunnel that we have plants in these are now needing hardened of before planting, possibly next week.
These are five thousand Cauliflower, and five thousand purple sprouting, usually these are a winter crop, but I read that they can be done through the summer, so we have done some as a trial, everyone likes purple sprouting and will be great for putting in the nets.
The blocking still goes on, and Rab is doing more swede, beetroot, lettuce, spinach, kohl rabi, and Ruby chard, we will continue blocking seeds through the summer, mostly for replacing harvested crops in the tunnels, and there are the over winter crops for the fields which get done.
Won’t be long now before we need to get the weeding machines out for the field crops, these weeds grow better and faster than any veg.
