6th April
At long last we got the tunnel sheeted.
On Monday we had the digger in, so we got the trench dug around the tunnel.
We dig a trench around the tunnel for the polythene to get earthed in, this helps strengthen up the tunnel when the winds arrive.
But I didn’t expect to be able to get the polythene on as the forecast for the week was above 10 mph every day, we usually only try and sheet a tunnel it if is around 6 mph winds.
The polythene is 70 meters long by 15 meters wide, and if the wind gets up we have an enormous kite.
But on Tuesday Morning I arrived in at the tunnels at 6.45 and yes, it was a wee bit windy.
But by 7 am the wind was zero and the sun was getting up, perfect tunnel sheeting weather.
We only need around 2 hrs to get the polythene safe enough that it will not blow away, but 3 hrs to have it super tight, all was going great until around 9.30 then the wind picked up.
Luckily, we got it finished but it is not as tight as I would have liked, we now have all the doors back on, and irrigation sorted and working.
Turns out that Thursday was the best day of the week with zero wind all day and heat, forecast was rain and wind.
We also got the five thousand lettuces planted, in the cosy tunnel, and if it heats up just a wee bit, we will be harvesting salad bags, spinach and ruby chard, which I have been saying for a couple of weeks.
But again, every day this week we have been going into temperatures around zero,
But we are in April now so things will start to come on.
